President's Message

2005 HAWAII JAYCEES PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello everyone! My name Wes Kam and I am your 62nd President of the Hawaii Jaycees. I have overcome many obstacles as a Jaycee. As a new member, I survived an oil fire at a project that burned 16 percent of my face and body. I did not let this stop me from serving as my home chapter, the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees as an ID director, CDVP, Corresponding Secretary, Executive Vice President, their 45th President, and Immediate Past President. Continuing on as an officer for the Hawaii Jaycees, I served as an Awards and Comp PM, Metro VP, CDVP, Region 1 Director, Region 2 Director, and Membership VP.

As a chapter officer, I had the opportunity to receive numerous recognition including the Rodney Miyamura memorial award for most outstanding director, D5 ambassador and John H. Armbruster recipient, open speak up winner, Prime graduate as well as many others. I was honored to serve as the 1997 JCI World Congress Host chapter President hosting over 7000 Jaycees from over 110 countries.

As a Hawaii Jaycees officer I am honored to have been recognized as the Hawaii Jaycees Administrative Support of the year, Vice President of the year, as well as the U.S. Jaycees R. Bradley Trafton memorial award for the top 25 state officers in the Nation.

Being an officer most of my Jaycee life I always placed the member as 1st priority. When I chaired one of my projects I always wondered if this will really serve the member. Always working on creating brand new, never done before projects because, hey, even I will get bored doing the same projects for so many years. Being built on innovation, the HI Blood Bank of Hawaii, Aloha Week Festivals, Miss Hawaii Scholarship Pageant, Honolulu Marathon, etc. were not created by redoing the same projects over and over again. This year, we need to bring back this innovation or as I said in my speech, “At the 75th anniversary I do not want everyone to mention how great the Hawaii Jaycees were in the 90’s!”

As an officer of the Hawaii Jaycees for six years, I am also aware of some skeletons in our closet that needs to be taken care of during my year. Whether, it is recognizing those who have helped us all these years and went unrecognized or unpaid monetary commitments to a certain chapter that needs to be fixed, it will be done this year.

My number 1 goal this year is to hopefully inspire all of you to one day take my place in the greatest organization in the world. Nothing will please me more than seeing a member or officer that I helped this year become the future Hawaii Jaycees President. For those who asked me when I was a new member so many years ago what I wanted to be, my answer was,” to be a chapter President!” My home chapter took great care of me as a new member, calling me on every project, greeting me at all of the events, etc. Remembering what it was like to be a member, my other goal this year is to help ensure that the chapters of the Hawaii Jaycees are taking care of their members. My theme, “No Member Left Behind” is my way of saying that thru the entire setback that I have been thru as a new member, I wasn’t left behind by the Jaycees.

I have only eleven months left to set my legacy as having a great year for the Hawaii Jaycees. I need everyone’s help as I will help you. I really do not want this pain in my right arm and hand to go to waste. I waited too long for this…

Thank you.

Proud to Be a Hawaii Jaycee!

Wes Kam

62nd President
